Allie Ford

PhD student, Natural Resource Sciences

Pronouns: she/her/they/their

Bio: I am originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, where I spent a lot of time prowling the forests and seashores and developed a profound love for the natural world, and where I did my BSc (Honours) in Ecology and Conservation Biology at Memorial University. I now reside in the Montreal area, and am a PhD student in Murray Humphries’ Northern Wildlife Ecology Lab in the Centre for Indigenous Peoples’ Nutrition and Environment, at McGill University. Working in collaboration with the Cree of Eeyou Istchee, my PhD research focuses on culturally significant plants, traditional seasonal and phenological knowledge, and social-ecological resilience.

Description of work: I have loved art since childhood and work in a variety of media, though lately I’ve been really into ink. In my visual art and writing, I often address themes of identity, human connections and perceived division from nature, environmental change, and spirituality. These artworks were created with water-based ink (brush pen, marker, and/or fine-line pen, depending on the piece, and on 9×12″ mix media or Bristol paper).

  1. Beautiful drawings Allie! I especially adore “Lightning”, I feel like I’m simultaneously lying on the forest floor admiring the branches waving above me and exploring the network of roots. I can’t tear my eyes away!
